Tell It Slant
Introduction to Creative Nonfiction
Personal Essay Writing
8-Week Writing Workshop
with Stacey Foster

Overview
In one of her poems, Emily Dickenson guides us to “Tell all the Truth but tell it Slant.” With these words, she encompasses the genre of creative nonfiction (CNF): “to tell the truth, yes, but to become more than a mere transcriber of life’s factual experience” (Miller and Paola ix). With this workshop, you will learn ways to accomplish such a task.
Throughout the eight weeks, you will discover the basics of CNF and work toward a completed personal essay. Through readings and exercises, you will unearth potential topics. From there, you will understand techniques and strategies to bring form and CNF flair to those topics, and eventually create a fully drafted essay that you will share with the group. The last two weeks will be dedicated to workshopping your pieces.
